The Hvar theatre opened it's doors in 1612 and is known as the oldest public theatre in Europe. From it’s beginning the theatre provided a space for all social classes to enjoy cultural and social events. In the old days a poor fisherman could even bring a few sardines as payment to enter the theatre. It is certainly one of the most beautiful theatres in Europe and has remained a centre of Hvar’s cultural life up to this day.
